An 85-pound Labrador retriever named Timber endured cactus spines and a cut to hunt down his California family 2 miles away at a house he’d only visited by car.

At midnight on New Year’s Eve, the chocolate Lab came home about 30 hours after he went missing.

“I thought he was gone,” Justin Murrietta said.  His eyes welled with tears as a panting Timber plopped down at his feet this morning. “It’s awesome that he came back to us.”

But Timber wasn’t living with Murrietta.  He was living in a different home.

Murrietta, his wife, April Murrietta, and their two daughters rent a home on Via Oeste in Yorba Linda, but the landlord does not allow dogs.  Timber stays with Justin’s parents, who live about 2 miles away on Avenida de las Estrellas in Yorba Linda.

The Murriettas pick up Timber by car a few times a month to spend time with them at home.
