Cymbeline and the flyer that left him with jaws clamped shut

A restaurant’s promise from a menu of “mouthwatering results” took on new meaning for a Scottish terrier named Cymbeline.

As a part of its advertising, a British restaurant, Roosters, included a high gloss menu as a mailer.  A common practice implemented by many restaurants.

When the flyer arrived at the Colchester, Essex, England home of Kimberly Fisher, the paper caught the eye of Cymbeline.  Ms. Fisher trained the dog to retrieve newspapers and mail when they arrive.

One would normally expect the dog to drop the material when the pet stands in front of its owner.

Not this time.

“He could not set down the Roosters menu when he dropped the rest of the post.  He brought me this menu but it had stuck his jaws together,” said Ms. Fisher. “It was a high-gloss paper menu which had turned into a paste.  The gum was stuck between his teeth.   This distressed him and he pawed his mouth.  I tried to help but within seconds the menu had glued his jaws shut.”

“I tried to get it out with a tooth pick but it was no good.  We had to wait for an emergency slot at the vets. They took about 40 minutes to get this stuff out.”

Veterinarian Ben Bennett, who worked on Cymbeline commented, “I’ve never seen anything like it before in 20 years so the chances of it happening again are pretty rare.  The cardboard had gone like papier mâché in his mouth, and where his canine teeth fit together closely it had got wrapped round the bottom teeth and jammed them together.  He couldn’t open his mouth.  He sat there very quietly while we picked away with a fine pick until we had removed enough of the cardboard to get a bit of movement.”

Representatives from Roosters were surprised by the events.  A spokesman for the restaurant said, “We send leaflets quite regularly and this is the first time in about five years that we have [had something like] this.”

“If we’re having this problem I can tell you every other fast food retailer is having it.”
